252 rings means a true old growth tree

DARBY, Mont. — More than 200 years after Lewis and Clark descended into the Bitterroot Valley hikers are following their footsteps on the trail they traversed. It's just a couple miles north of the Idaho border through a cluster of old growth trees that stand witness to the famed passage. Corps of Discovery historian and engineer Ted Hall led his adult education students and their families along the trail Thursday. Lewis and Clark took the same route in September 1805.
