Project spotlight Livesawn oak

As stated in the title if you are thinking about ordering white oak in either character or select grade live sawn is always the answer! We are lucky enough to have great customers who are so happy with their new floor they brag to us about how great they look. This project is out of Michigan where the customer had serious concerns about moisture and plank width. She was being steered toward engineered flooring but a careful conversation about where the house is located and any proximity to water or serious moisture revealed solid wood was fine.

We started out with a character grade oak but we here at K.D. Woodscompany want our customers to get the best version of the best floor they can afford and so we began looking at live sawn oak. Let's take a look at how live sawn is cut.

These crosscuts capture the all the grain in the most amazing way. Let's take a look at the results at our customer's home.

The finish on the floor is Rubio Monocoat Smoke 5%. We always prefer the organic finishes over the standard urethanes for the look as well as the maintenance. If you look closely you can see how the grain is different from plain sawn in that there are long arcs of grain and lots of flecking.

The Rubio finish added just a touch of color to the oak taking it down to a deeper and richer look.
