Unique looks in flooring

While most flooring is laid in the standard side by side racking method there are indeed some amazing alternatives. We might as well start out with one of the most amazing installations we have ever been a part of, in walnut.

Select walnut. Select grade was chosen here to accentuate the elegance of the pattern and not distract with any sap content which would normally appear in character grade walnut. What might be escaping you if you are not a professional is the handscraping on the wood. Handscraping, when done right, is literally done by hand. The woodworker will take his planer to each and every plank in the order. The materials will then be sanded smooth leaving a surface texture that is unmistakable.

This image shows the handscraping perfectly. Now on to another stunning and yet very traditional pattern.

Next up we have the chevron pattern. This floor was done for a hotel in Manhattan, the Roger Hotel. The beautiful materials are antique oak distressed grade done in a traditional finish with a low satin sheen. If you are considering a pattern it is important to keep in mind you will need to add more than the standard 7% waste factor. Your waste factor will be more around 15-20% due to the complexity of the pattern generating far more waste than normal.

Clearly the interior designers were intent on taking amazing flooring and pushing the design even further. The results here are stunning to say the least. Let's take a look at another very popular pattern, herringbone.

You can see the difference here. The herringbone pattern has an interlocking look but is just as interesting as any pattern. Keep in mind doing a patterned floor will be more expensive not just on materials but also on labor. Whether it is worth it or not well that is your decision!
